Why it caught my eye
This Hot Wheels City Shark Chomp Beach set is one of those small, high-fun toys that often punches above its weight. It’s a full playset with a giant shark gimmick plus one 1:64 die‑cast car included, and the current price is a pretty good markdown compared with typical retail. If you like gifting something that looks impressive on the shelf and gets kids playing fast, this is a solid find.
What you get
The box includes the Hot Wheels City Shark Chomp Beach playset and one Hot Wheels 1:64 scale die‑cast car. The track offers two ways to play: launch the car into the shark’s mouth and try to perform a figure‑8 stunt that knocks the shark out, or pivot the launcher to send the car over a gap jump to avoid the shark. The shark resets easily by pulling its head up or opening its mouth. It’s a friction‑powered set (no batteries) and the toy is a multicolor assembly that measures roughly 14 x 18 x 4.7 inches.
What buyers are saying
Parents and gift-givers report mixed-but-leaning-positive experiences. Plenty of folks say kids love it and it’s quick and easy to assemble. A couple of reviewers call out the chomping mechanism as finicky — teeth that don’t always stay up and a head/top teeth separation that needed a DIY tweak to feel more reliable. One reviewer mentioned taping the teeth to the head to keep play going. Another practical note from a European reviewer: only one car comes in the set, which some buyers thought was a bit skimpy.
Good to know
Manufacturer details list a minimum age of 48 months (4 years) and Mattel as the maker. It’s listed as a no‑warranty item from the manufacturer, and the set works by simple friction rather than electronics. The play pattern is short, repeatable races and stunts, so it’s great for quick bursts of play or as a stocking‑stuffer style gift, but you may want to add extra cars from your Hot Wheels collection for longer sessions.
My take
If you’ve already got a stash of Hot Wheels cars at home or you’re buying for a kid who loves dramatic, hands‑on toys, this is a pretty good one at the current price. The shark stunt is the main appeal and it usually delights kids, but be aware some shoppers needed to tweak the chomping parts to avoid little annoyances. For the money, it’s a fun, easy‑to‑set‑up set that gives you instant play value — just consider adding a couple of extra cars so the action keeps going.
